Introduction

The Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program provides fellowships for exceptionally qualified researchers in areas associated with African studies. This initiative aims to assist two main groups: 1) scholars from Kyoto University (KU) seeking to conduct research in Africa, and 2) researchers from Kyoto University’s affiliated institutions in Africa who wish to undertake research in Kyoto. Fellowships are available for a duration of at least three months and can extend up to a maximum of one year, covering the period between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.

Scholarship Information

The Canon Foundation in Europe operates as a charitable organization dedicated to fostering international cultural and scientific connections between Europe and Japan. Established on December 22nd, 1987, under Dutch law, it originated from Canon Europa N.V., the European Headquarters of Canon, and is officially registered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. While the Foundation is legally and financially independent, it maintains a strong collaborative relationship with Canon Europa N.V., which provided the initial funding for its establishment.

Scholarship Requirements:

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently employed either at Kyoto University (KU) or KU’s partner institutions as post-doctoral fellows or faculty members at the time of application.
  • Hold a minimum of a master’s degree.

Additionally, African applicants can qualify by submitting one of two reference letters obtained from their prospective hosts at Kyoto University, demonstrating existing partnerships.

Scholarship Duration and Award

  • Successful applicants will receive financial support ranging from 22,500 euros to 27,500 euros per year, with a pro-rated distribution for varying periods.
  • The Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) will manage the disbursement of payments directly and communicate the detailed payment procedure to each successful applicant.

Required Documents

Kindly submit the following documents to Kyoto University Africa Unit (africaunit@kura.kyoto-u.ac.jp)

  • Reference Letters: Include two reference letters, each limited to one page. One letter should come from an individual able to speak to your academic qualifications and professional work, while the other should be a confirmation letter from your prospective host, affirming their willingness to provide research or work facilities during the proposed period.
  • Research Plan: Provide a comprehensive research plan with a clear title at the top of the page, including proposed starting and ending dates. The plan should incorporate a general cost estimate covering living expenses, travel, research costs, insurance, etc. (maximum 2 pages).
  • List of Publications/Achievements: Furnish a list of your academic publications or professional achievements in chronological order, containing details such as all authors, place and year of publication, and page references.
  • Curriculum Vitae: Submit your current curriculum vitae.
  • Academic Certificate: Provide one copy of your doctoral certificate or your highest academic degree.
  • Passport-Size Photograph: Include one passport-size photograph of yourself.
