Payment:
Scholarship award recipients will be required to confirm enrollment at an Iowa college or university during the summer of 2024. Payments will be directly disbursed to the respective Iowa college or university.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, the applicant must be an Iowa resident graduating from an Iowa high school in the 2023-2024 school year. They should be accepted as a full-time undergraduate student at a fully-accredited Iowa college or university, majoring in one of the following arts areas: animation, architecture, creative writing, dance, English, fashion, fine arts education, folk & traditional arts, graphic design, literature, media arts, music, theatre, or visual arts. Immediate family members or dependent children of Iowa Arts Council board and staff are ineligible.
Artistic Work Samples:
Submit 3-5 artistic work samples showcasing the quality and type of artwork the applicant creates. These should align with the type of artwork intended for study in college and support the vision and goals outlined in the application. The format for artistic work samples varies by discipline:
- Literary Arts: Examples include poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and playwriting. Submit documents (each not exceeding 5 pages) demonstrating literary artwork, including title, year created, concept description, and relevant context.
- Visual Arts: Examples include drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, photography, and installation. Submit high-quality digital images or video files of visual artwork, with details such as title, year created, concept description, and relevant context.
- Performing/Media Arts: Examples include music, film, theatre, dance, performance art, and music composition. Submit high-quality video or audio files identifying the applicant’s participation, along with title, year created, concept description, and relevant context.
Online Application Submission:
Applicants must use the Iowa Arts Council’s SlideRoom, an online application portal, for submission. Applications in any other format will not be accepted. Review Process:
Department Eligibility Review:
- Submitted applications undergo a thorough review by staff to ensure completion, eligibility, and adherence to published guidelines.
- Applications are assessed in the order they are received, and any additional information or clarification received after the deadline is not considered.
- Staff also examines the applicant’s compliance and standing with the Iowa Economic Development Authority, State, and Federal government.
- Ineligible or incomplete applications, as determined by staff, will not advance to panel review and are excluded from the appeals process.
Competitive Panel Review:
- Eligible applications proceed to a competitive evaluation by a volunteer citizen panel comprising Iowa arts and culture professionals with relevant expertise.
- Applications are scored and ranked according to the published scoring rubric.
- Panel rankings and recommendations are submitted for consideration and funding approval to the Administrator of the Iowa Arts Council and the Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
- Scholarship funding is allocated based on the ranked list and available funds.
- All scholarship decisions are final, and there is no avenue for appeal based on dissatisfaction.

Scoring Rubric:
- The Iowa Scholarship for the Arts Scoring Rubric is employed by the panel to assess applications.
